MULTI MEDIA USAGE IN ISLAMIC EDUCATION –

CAMBODIA Case Study

I.Introduction

Education is the starting point of every human development and it is a light that shows the mankind the right direction to surge. If education fails to inculcate self-discipline and commitment to achieve in the minds of student, it is not totally their fault. We as educators play an important role in making the learning process interesting and enjoyable. We have to convert education into something interests and learning process has to generate interest in the students and motivate them to stay back in the institution than to run away from it. The purpose of education is not just making a student literate but adds rational thinking, knowledge ability, and self-sufficiency. In order to achieve this purpose, effective and innovative teaching and learning methods are vital, especially in facing digital students’ era. The digital Revolution has resulted in one unintended consequence. Today’s youth are much more media-centric than previous generations.

In Kingdom of Cambodia The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Kingdom of Cambodia has launched and adopted the policy on information and communication technology

(ICT) in the education system since 2005 and it earmarks a sensitive challenge of the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to reform its delivery services effectively within a new context of universalization. This educational ICT policy and strategies is a practical path which has been chosen to get along well with the world trend of implementing the strategies and the national goals of education for all. Emphasis is also made on the nonformal education, distance education, training of professionals, education quality at uppersecondary education and post-secondary education levels through ICT, which is now becoming a relevant life skill required in a knowledge-based society and a critical tool for building partnership between government institutions, concerned national and international organizations, civil society and communities and legal entities within the private sector as well.  In this context, if we are talking about the ICT in Islamic Education system in Cambodia, it is not known within the Muslim community and very limited in which in need of more development and cooperation with the related development partners.

1.What is Multimedia

The term multimedia by definition means “more than one media”. According to Hofstetter (2001), multimedia is the use of computer to present and combine text, graphics, audio and video with links and tools that let the user navigate, interact, create and communicate. In other words, multimedia is the combination of various digital media, into an integrated multi-sensory interactive application or presentation to convey information to an audience (Damodharan and Rengarajan, 2007; ButcherPowell, 2005). Other than that, interactivity is also part of the elements that are required in order to complete interactive communication process through the use of multimedia (Jamalludin and Zaidatun, 2005). Originally, a multimedia presentation did not have to be digital. For example, multimedia might have incorporated a slide show for visuals, a tape recorder for audio, and an overhead projector for text. But as software and hardware became capable of and adept at handling more than one media, the term multimedia was coined to define computer software applications and presentations that utilized more than one media (Shelly, Cashman, Gunter and Gunter, 2006).

 

2.What is the Importance of Multimedia?

The use of multimedia in teaching and learning is not only able to maintain students’ interest but also able to make them enjoy learning. Furthermore, it is has been pointed out that multimedia has the potential to create high quality learning environments. The key elements of multiple media, user control over the delivery of information, and interactivity can be used to enhance the learning process creating integrated learning environments. Multimedia-based learning is becoming increasingly popular. While it has limitations, and certainly should not be seen as a substitute for face to face interaction, it does have numerous advantages for both teachers and students.

3.What are the multimedia tool usage in Islamic Teaching?

  a. Making Video Clip

We can produce the video clip according to the topic that we are going to teach or even ask the students to produce the clip then we can use it explaining the meaning of the lessons through the produced video clip.

  b. Use Internet as the teaching aid

In the borderless globalization of information technology age, internet plays a vital role as knowledge disseminator. Nothing can stop us from getting what we want to know, we want to see and we want to listen because internet can be accessed by everybody. Whether it is harmful or useful, it depends on us how to decide. From its we can research for our teaching and learning.

  c. Power Point Slide show with Projectors

Microsoft PowerPoint program had been used to modify the contents of the material. It helped researcher or teachers to represent them in a more meaningful way, using different media elements. By incorporating multimedia elements into the project, the students were able to learn better since they use multiple sensory modalities, which would make them more motivated to pay more attention to the information presented and retain the information better. While transforming notes into PowerPoint slides, researcher was not only transferring texts to the slides, but also inserting some graphics related to the topics in order to make students understand them better. Sometimes, another touching slides of advice with soothing background music would be linked to certain topic slides.

  d.Lectures on Radio / TV online

We now as teachers we can use our smartphone to record or do the lectures live on social media like Facebook, line, Istagram in which it can be reached to thousands of viewer in this smart phone era. The viewers can reach the lecture any time and can ask question thru the comments or inbox.

  e. EBook or Islamic Application on Smartphone

Many smartphone apps cater to religious needs. Some show mosques and halal businesses close to a user’s location. Salah 3D is an iPhone guide to how to pray. Another app, Quran, includes text and audio versions of the Koran not only in Arabic, but other languages, making the holy book more accessible to Muslims whose first language is not Arabic

II. MULTI MEDIA USAGE IN ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN CAMBODIA 

In Cambodia in general, people social media is very popular now especial for the young people who are addicted in Smartphone using.  More than 6.3 million people used their smartphone to access the Internet in December 2015 (Telecommunication Sector 2015) . As the Only one Muslim Media Center in Cambodia, we found that it is very important to use the Multimedia to educate Islam or spread the Islam to Muslim or non-Muslim especially in the Majority NonMuslim Society. Unfortunately this multimedia tool is very limited in Cambodia and we are struggling to do whatever we can to teach Islam with the poor technological tools.

The Current Multimedia tool Usage: 

1.PowerPoint Slide and Projectors

Very few that use this method to teach or spread the Islam in Cambodia, most the school use only chalk and talk method it is being used only in seminar or training. The problem most is most the Islamic Teachers are not able to create Power point slide or even knowing the basic computers. There is now one School called Rahmah international School that has been providing the hi-tech equipment in teaching Islam for the primary students. The Smart board are being used in the classrooms installed with e learning program. This is a kind of Private school managed by a Kuwait Based -Organization Rahma International.

2.Radio and TV online

We have Cambodian Muslim TV online which under the management are prepared unprofessionally by Cambodian Muslim Media Center broadcast through Facebook and YouTube, Also a few more NGOs also producing the video clip about Islam and it online.  We have one radio air time called Cambodian Islamic Voice broadcast in Khmer Language under the production of the Cambodian Muslim Foundation Organization (CMDF). There was another radio program called Radio Sapcham (The Voice ) given the free airtime from 2008 to 2016 , but now it is no longer on air because of some internal problem then it was closed. It was very popular program and people considered it as Islamic Teachers in The Mosquito nets. It means the people learned Islam a lot from that program even they are sleeping in the mosquito nets. Beside this programs, Cambodian Muslim Media Center has been producing a TV Online Live show, and it became the first and the only online program in Cambodia that talking about Islam, in which both Muslim and Non-Muslim Social Media users can view. In short we don’t have Islamic or TV Channel Yet in Cambodia while in the neighboring country like Thailand there are several channels.

3.Islamic Application for Smartphone and Islamic- E-book

In this modern age , a big Islamic Library is in Its also good source to study Islam through the Application, but Unfortunately we do have enough in Cambodia However, in 201 Some students has developed some useful app for smart phone something like Quran Translation in Khmer , Hadith Riyaduslihin App, Surah Yasin Translation in Khmer .  Besides the app in Android Store and OS Play store, we also have some website that you may use as a source for e-book about Islam in Cambodian Language but not many while the Islamic education resource online is limited.

 4.Video Clip

Nowadays, there are some Muslim NGOs start to produce the short Video clip or translate the Islamic video materials about Islam in Khmer and post on their Facebook pages, they are considered as a good way to spread Islam to the smart phone users. However , we are very on this sectors. 

III.CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Technology is changing the classroom and teaching experience. Information and Communication Technology has made many innovations in teaching and learning process in order to accommodate challenging digital students’ needs.

Consequently, we need to have interactive teaching and learning tools by using the multimedia in order to ensure the learning outcomes able to be achieved. Hence, we as educators need to take up the challenge by equipping ourselves with multimedia skills to enhance students’ study interest. From the above, we found that by having a mixed of multimedia tools in teaching and learning process it able to change students’ negative mindset towards a subject when they enjoy learning and feel motivated to participate in class activities. ,

Cambodia just started to use Multi Media in Islamic Education in this era but it is very limited and really in need to use more multimedia so that we can spread the authentic of Islam. The Same time, the Islamic teachers need to be trained on IT and the use of the multimedia tools in teaching. We need to have Islamic TV Channel and Radio stations like other neighboring countries, and this will never happened without the assistance in term of material, financial and spiritual support from foreign donors with high willingness.
